Summarising such a big show in a few words is not easy, but we’ve picked some trends we saw as part of our highlights of the show

Catchoom

The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona now attracts over 93,000 visitors and owing to the sheer size of the show it becomes a real challenge to see even half of what is offered.

Catchoom was out in force at the show (it is our home base after all!) attending key notes with Mark Zuckerberg from Facebook, Carlos Ghosn, Renault-Nissan CEO, Shazam, Flickr, Google, Philips, GE, FedEx, Evrythng and many more. We also toured the halls from the App Planet to the halls dominated by operators and manufacturers.

Summarizing such a big show in a few words is not easy, but we’ve picked some trends we saw as part of our highlights of the show:

  1. Wearables are now becoming mainstream
  2. Internet of Things (IoT) is driving innovation
  3. Emerging economies are driving growth in mobile
  4. Personalization of experiences is set to increase

Wearables are now becoming mainstream

With launches by Guess of the Guess Connect Watch and of the Swarovski Shine, it is clear that branded good manufacturers are set to get in on the act of consumer wearables. The Swarovski Shine embeds clever technology in the form of the activity tracking crystal, a solar-powered unit meaning endless battery life.

We also noted that enthusiasm for AR/VR eyewear was muted at the show, with the new HTC Valve and Sony SmartEyeGlass receiving mixed reviews. This is unlikely to be a consumer trend this year as it seems to be on hold pending usability advances. We’ll see what else we find out at the Wearable Tech Show where Catchoom is exhibiting today and tomorrow in London. We’ll keep you posted.

Internet of Things (IoT) is driving innovation

The IoT was a big theme at the show with powerhouse Evrythng explaining how by 2020 there will be over 1 trillion connectable products created annually.

Emerging economies are driving growth in mobile

Jimmy Wales from Wikipedia made a great point in his keynote by asking the audience to shed aside preconceptions about emerging economies, with internet connection speeds in African cities like Lagos being on a par with those in developed economies.

Personalization of experiences is set to increase

Both Philips and Domino’s Pizza put forward strong arguments for distinguishing between a personal and a personalized service with fully customisable lighting and pizza experiences already on the cards for both firms (powered by mobile apps of course).
