Global online food delivery marketplace foodpanda recently acquired Delivery Hero-backed TastyKhana in India, to expand its position in the food-loving country. foodpanda also acquired Mexican food delivery businesses PedidosYa, SeMeAntoja and Superantojo. The group has been operating in the Mexican market since December 2012 under the hellofood brand. With these acquisitions, foodpanda wants to accelerate growth and become the ‘Amazon’ of food ordering in emerging markets.

Ralf Wenzel, Co-founder and Managing Director, foodpanda Group spoke to us on the growing importance of India, “Indians love food, and more importantly for us, they love to order food. However, the majority of these orders are still made offline. We want to make all these orders more convenient through our mobile food ordering app and website. India is the biggest food delivery market in the world. Naturally, it always played a very important role in our global strategy.”

He commented on the acquisition in India, “TastyKhana, started in 2007, has been one of the first food delivery portals in India and has a great team behind it. Together with our existing foodpanda India setup, we will be able to offer the widest selection of restaurants in over 170 cities in India.”

TastyKhana will remain an independent brand; however, it will work closely together with the foodpanda team. Together, they will partner with over 10,000 restaurants in India.

“We have just launched our first TV campaign in India and will continue to serve our customers with great restaurants, superior customer service, amazing deals and the easiest way to order food,” said Wenzel. The company wants to partner with more restaurants and offer its service in even more cities. “Next to this, we continue to invest in customer service,” he added.

Similarly, Mexico is a huge market for food delivery. After the acquisitions, Mexican customers in 10 cities have selection of over 2,500 restaurants.

In a separate acquisition deal, Delivery Hero also acquired the hellofood businesses in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. In all, it aggregates 17,500 restaurants across 11 countries in Latin America.

We await to see which emerging market is next on foodpanda’s radar.
